Australia Announces New English Language Requirements for Temporary Graduate and Student Visas

Australia has updated the English language requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas, as part of the Government’s Migration Strategy. These changes, effective for applications submitted on or after March 23, 2024, aim to enhance the educational experience of international students in Australia.

 New English Language Requirements

The Australian Government has revised the English language requirements for Student and Temporary Graduate visas, aligning them with the Migration Strategy’s objectives. These updates are designed to support international students in having a positive educational experience and preparing them for the skilled workforce.

English Language Requirements for Temporary Graduate Visa (TGV)

  • IELTS Scores: The required IELTS test scores have increased from 6.0 to 6.5, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each component (reading, writing, speaking, and listening).
  • Test Validity: The validity window for test results has been reduced from 3 years to 1 year. Applicants must provide evidence of completing an English language test within 1 year immediately before the visa application date.

English Language Requirements for Student Visa

  • IELTS Scores: The required IELTS test score for a Student visa has increased from 5.5 to 6.0.
  • Packaged ELICOS: The IELTS score requirement for undertaking a packaged ELICOS course has increased from 4.5 to 5.0.
  • University Foundation Courses: Students undertaking university foundation courses must have an IELTS score of 5.5.
  • ELICOS: There are no changes for students studying English through ELICOS.

These new requirements are intended to ensure that international students are well-prepared for their studies and future careers in Australia.
